My Favourite Spots in Amsterdam

You can pack a lot into three days in this vibrant bike crazy city and that's just what I did with my daughter Florence. Heading into her final year in graphic design at Leeds she came prepped with a long list of galleries, bookshops, design studios, exhibitions, restaurants and cafes to explore, basically my dream guide! So for those curious here's a round up of some of our favourite Amsterdam haunts.

Cafes

We stayed around the corner from DePijip neigbourhood, a basic hotel nothing to shout about but great location. We ate out for breakfast and indulged in delicous cinamon buns, whipped butter & chocolate sprinkles on bread and fennel seed spiced rolls with cheese. Our favourite spots were LOUF and CAFE COOS

Restaurants

Gosh we ate well! De Tros was buzzing and delicous and we shared a few plates including their signature lasagne and enoki fritters. Another night we weathered a storm and headed to Noord to Restaurant Barracuda for a seafood feast. WOW!

Galleries

We timed our visit for the first major retrospective exhibition of graphic designer Karel Martens at The Stedelijk We both share a love of colour, bold graphics and pattern so it was amazing to be wrapped up in Martens world of creativity spanning over six decades, so much so we were there for 4 hours!

Martens studio recreated as a photgraphic backdrop, so effective and so much to look at and discover.

Inside a Colour study beach cabin from Le Havre, France. We bought some of the hand towels!

Studio Visit

It's always great visiting other Risograph Studios and Terry Bleu Bookshop was the BEST! We loved the space and creative energy and abundance of artist books, zines and prints and meeting and chatting with founder Hugo Rocci. Find out more here.

Bookshop

We got lost for an hour in Boekie Woekie bookshop, an aladins cave of zines and publications by artists from around the world.

Always colour spotting and pattern hunting.

Thanks Amsterdam for a great few days x
